Far better than the trilogy of the ring
The lord of rings movie trilogy was good, but Peter Jackson stole the best of its ideas from Boorman's Excalibur. This one is absolutely my favorite movie of all times. Not a crowd pleaser, anyway, as much as Jackson's: the problem is, those who have no esoteric knowledge will never come to appreciate Boorman fully. The true spirit of knights on one side, the true spirit of sorcerers on the other, are both faithfully represented in Excalibur, like no other movie was able to do. None of the dialogs are superfluos, deceively simple yet hard to get... All the scenes succeed in creating the feeling of primordial era, and nature appears at its maximum dark splendour, just like the savage women impossible to tame who represent all that is wild and beautiful. Motivating the male honour and valour, which are not empty words here (what is really rare), but also the male destructivity. A timeless legend, closer to us than we can figure at first... but Wagner and Orff should give enough clue.

A classic from a most unsual film maker
John Boorman is a hard director to pin down. He can do a gritty crime drama like POINT BLANK with Lee Marvin and then he does a film like this! EXCALIBUR is the finest Arthur film of them all. Forget KING ARTHUR, forget FIRST KNIGHT or even CAMELOT, THIS IS THE ONE. A wonderful cast, including a young Helen Murren as Morgana, Nigel Terry as Arthur. Best performance has to be Nicol Williamson as Merlin. Look for a pre-Picard Patrick Stewart. Beautifully filmed with a truly majestic score, the only film of this type to come close is probably Richard Donner's LADYHAWKE.

Well stagged King Arthur movie
This movie presents the Arthur movie in terms of the magic sword legend.
It modifies Vivian into Morgan Le Fey and takes several other liberties with the traditional plot, but it is well written , played and fun to watch!
If you likes knights in armor, sorcery and mythical mystical
legend, you'll love this movie.
