Gilliam Falls Flat on His Face - A Fan Turns Away in Disgust
Ever since Brazil, I have followed Gilliam's film-making closely, delighting in the detail and embracing the grandeur of each of his subsequent creations. When the Brothers Grimm came along, I didn't bother making the trip to the theatre - I didn't feel gripped by the concept, the cast, or the trailers - and only in 2009 (New Years Day) did I sit down with family to watch the DVD which I picked up for $4 - a price that seemed like a bargain at the time.

Knowing that Grimm tales almost never have a happy ending, and nor do Gilliam films, I started out watching the film with an anticipation of this film's ending - will it be a classic Gilliam ending or a sickening Hollywood happily ever after? I wish I could say I knew.

By the middle of the film, after repeatedly playing the helpless optimist in the face of multiple cries of protest about the film being confusing and repulsive (and often repugnant and inexcusable), by the rest of the family, I eventually threw in the towel myself, pressed pause, and asked honestly, "Ok... does anybody actually care what's going to happen in the rest of the movie?" The answer was unanimous, and the DVD is now in hand on its way to the garage, where it will await the Spring yard sale.

Come Spring, the Brothers Grimm will be the only hole in my Gilliam collection. It is an uninteresting, unnecessary, gratuitous waste of celluloid, made worse by the knowledge that talented actors like Heath Ledger and Jonathan Pryce were tainted by their participation in it.

To sum up, this movie... sucks. If you haven't yet seen it, don't. If you are tempted to see it out of curiosity, save yourself the pain and gouge out your eyes instead.

You might not like it the first time!
This movie seems much more enjoyable every time I watch it. The first time I saw this in the theatre I somehow did not like it for the exception of the ending. I liked the ending so much that I saw it again and that time I liked the movie much better and understood it much better. Now I'm looking for the blu-ray version after watching it 3 times. Now I see how fun, creative, well-acted and original it is. Like a fun mental escape into fantasy. The characters also get more endearing after watching it more than once. If you did not like this movie the first time give it a second chance, pay attention, and simply enjoy the fun and creative nature of it. The desire to watch this multiple times has been far more enjoyable than watching other good movies only once.

Visually beautiful, otherwise terrible
Terry Gilliam just can't get past the visual, much like Tim Burton. Sometimes the visuals don't thwart the rest of the film, sometimes they do.

In Brothers Grimm, the visuals overwhelm a film that would have very little going for it anyway. Terrible dialogue, confused plot, poor acting (by excellent actors) -- all under really poor direction.

Why are so many characters -- Heath Ledger, Jonathan Pryce, Peter Stormare, among others -- given pointless, thick, accents which, when coupled with painfully confused dialogue, make them all but incomprehensible? Why in the remote village setting, are so many different accents piled on top of one another? Just an example of revoltingly bad scripting.

To his credit, Gilliam manages to hold the film together through to its conclusion, but that's about all. It amounts to getting most of the passengers off the ship before it sinks.

Good Old Fun and Suspense too.
Ok folks this type of story is suppose to be a tad creepy. It's the Brothers Grimm for petes sake. And no it's not the most fantastic acting or story telling but it certainly does it's job well enough. And in the end....well doesn't everyone always live happily ever after...or do they? My husband and I enjoyed it. And not a fairy tale sugar plum story I think the effects and story twists are just about right for what it was...a story....about the Brothers Grimm....all made up of course....with a touch of yester year days of ole. Loosen up and enjoy with bowl of popcorn ...... have a creepy time of it this Halloween.
